Your Braking System

Knowing the different parts of your braking system helps you identify and talk about your car’s braking issues. There are three main parts of your braking system:

Brake Pads
Your car’s brake pads actually stops your car, so it is critical that you replace them as often as necessary. A bake pad has two parts, a steel backing and a friction producing pad. When you apply the brakes, the pad presses against the brake disc and makes the car stop. When the friction producing pad wears away, the steel backing comes into contact with the disc brakes, reducing your ability to stop, producing a grating sound and causing damage to your car.
Brake Discs
Brake discs are also known as rotors. Over time, they wear from scraping against the brake pads. If you do not replace the worn-out friction pads on your brake pads, your rotors can wear out much fast. You can tell if your brake discs need replacement when you need to apply more pressure to stop or slow down. Technicians can check your rotors by measure the amount of metal remaining on the discs.
Brake Fluid
Brake fluid helps your braking system stop your car. You need to change your braking fluid based on the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance schedule. When you notice it takes your car longer to stop, you may need to change your brake fluid.
